Published on November 29th 2017

We've been getting a lot questions recently about how to whip a mountain bike! The whip is a great way to adding some style to your riding, and your air time! Who better to teach you how to impress your mates with this trick than Whip off Worlds Qualifier Blake Samson! Subscribe to GMBN: Get exclusive GMBN gear in the GMBN store! The whip is all about multi-tasking! Learn each stage separately, then put them all together and're bike will be stylishly stepping sideways in no time! Start by learning to carve the takeoff in one direction or another. Which way doesn't matter, everyone has one way they prefer over the other! Once you've got that, put a turn bar at the end and feel the bike step out a bit. Get used to this movement and get comfortable with'll be getting more and more exaggerated soon! Practice pushing your hips out in order to bring the rear out to the side and back. Once you can do that, then add the hips into the carve and the turn bar. This should bring the bike out much more! The perfect whip is a combination of a good strong carve, a turn of the bar away from the direction of travel and a good strong push with the hips outwards! if you're having trouble combining them all, try dropping your inside shoulder midair to help you get behind that bike a bit more and push outwards with your hips! Bringing the bike back is the most important stage! Once you've reached full extension you need to turn the bar back to face the direction of travel. This will bring the back end of the bike back in line, maybe not fully, but at least so that you don't get ejected out of the front door or need to re-tension your wheel after every jump! Give it a shot! They're great fun and, once mastered, there is no trick as simplistically stylish!
